Terms & Conditions

  • These are the Terms and Conditions of the 2019 Ōra King Awards Contest (Contest) that apply to any person seeking to enter the Contest (Applicant).
  • By entering the Contest, the Applicant accepts and agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions of entry (Terms). Information about prizes and any other entry instructions published by the Promoter from time to time also form part of these Terms.
  • The Promoter is The New Zealand King Salmon Co. Limited, 93 Beatty Street, Tahunanui, Nelson 7011, New Zealand (Promoter).
  • The Contest is open to professional chefs who actively use Ōra King salmon in their restaurant located in:
    • New Zealand (who will enter in the New Zealand Category);
    • Australia (who will enter in the Australian Category);
    • The United States of America, Canada and Mexico (who will enter in the North American Category, for the purposes of the contest, these countries are collectively referred to as North America).
    • Japan (who will enter in the Japanese Category).

Eligible Applicants

To be eligible for this competition, applicants must:

  • Be a professional chef that uses Ōra King and has listed this on the menu during 2019. Applicants may be asked to provide proof of this by submitting an image of Ōra King on their menu or an image of a recent Ōra King gill tag.
  • Use Ōra King as the salmon component in their competition dish.
  • Be available on the judging dates
  • Be available to feature in a video shoot and photoshoot preparing their entry dish.
  • Give consent for their image, video and entry dish to be featured on promotional material by Ōra King.
  • If invited to attend the New Zealand celebration and travelling from overseas, applicants must be legally allowed to enter New Zealand and hold a valid passport.
  • Applicants must be over 18 years of age, have formal culinary training from a culinary training institution or have been employed as a chef for three or more years and be proficient in all aspects of food preparation. Employees of the Promoter (or any other associated entity) and any agency involved with this Contest, and the immediate family of such employees, are ineligible to enter.

The Contest

  • The Contest opens at 6.00pm (NZST) on May 6 2019 and closes at 11.59pm (NZST) on July 31 2019 (Contest Period).
  • To enter the Contest, Eligible Applicants must, during the Contest Period, complete the entry form provided at Orakingsalmon.com. Applicants will be required to provide information about the techniques used for their dish and the inspiration behind their dish in addition to an image. Applications must be completed in English, except for the Japan category which must be completed in Japanese on Orakingsalmon.jp
  • Each Applicant may only submit one entry to the Contest. If more than one entry is received from a particular Applicant for the Contest, all entries submitted by that Applicant, except their first entry, will be invalid. Chefs must enter individually (not in a partnership).
  • This is a competition of skill. Chance plays no part in this Contest.
  • Six semi-finalists will be selected from each country category of all eligible entries by a judging panel appointed by the Promoter. Applicants will be awarded points for creativity, craftsmanship, taste and presentation.
  • Semi-finalists will be announced on August 12, 2019 on the Promoter’s social media platforms.
  • Three finalists will be selected from each region category from the semi-finalists by a panel appointed by the Promoter. Applicants will be awarded points for creativity, craftsmanship, and interpretation of the competition theme. The finalists will be announced on September 16 2019 on the Promoter’s social media platforms.
  • All three finalists from each region category will be invited to participate in the Ōra King Awards celebrations in New Zealand from October 13 – October 17 2019 (the tour). The Tour will showcase the New Zealand King Salmon facilities and highlights of the region.
  • Finalists will receive return economy flights to Nelson, New Zealand from their closest international airport, airport transfers in New Zealand, accommodation, entertainment, meals and transfers during the four nights of the Tour. Unless explicitly stated in these Terms, finalists will be responsible for all costs associated with their participation in this Contest, which may include but not limited to, their travel insurance, passports, visas, transfers to and from international airports, spending money, gratuities, and any other costs of a personal nature. Compliance with any health or other government requirements is the responsibility of the finalist.
  • There are four prizes in this Contest:
    • Best Ōra King Dish New Zealand (only open to Eligible Applicants in the New Zealand category);
    • Best Ōra King Dish Australia (only open to Eligible Applicants in the Australian category);
    • Best Ōra King Dish North America (only open to Eligible Applicants in the North American category);
    • Best Ōra King Dish Japan (only open to Eligible Applicants in the Japanese category).
  • The winners will be announced during the Tour at the Ōra King Awards Ceremony held in Marlborough on October 15, 2019 and will be published in a press release, on the Promoter’s website and social media platforms.
  • In the event that an ineligible Applicant is selected as a finalist or the Promoter is unable to contact a finalist within three days of their selection, having made reasonable attempts to do so, the Promoter may deem that finalist’s entry invalid.
  • By entering this Contest, Applicants agree to the Promoter’s use of their name, photographs, likeness, and their submitted dish and recipe for Contest and advertising purposes. Applicants grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence and right to edit, publish, use, adapt their entry dish and recipe for advertising and promotional purposes without compensation, permission or notification. Applicants irrevocably consent to the Promoter doing or omitting to do something with respect to the entry dish or recipe which would otherwise be an infringement of the Applicant’s moral rights in those items and the Applicant otherwise waives all rights of paternity, integrity, disclosure and withdrawal and any other rights that may be known as or referred to as “moral rights”, “droit moral” or the like that he or she may have with respect to the entry dish or recipe.
  • The Tour and prizes are not transferable, changeable or redeemable for cash.
  • As the Tour involves travel and activities, the finalists may be required to sign additional documentation, such as a waiver and indemnity in a form provided by the Promoter. It is up to the finalist to ensure that they are able to participate in the Tour and have or can obtain necessary travel documentation (failure to do so will mean that the finalist will forfeit the prize and no compensation will be payable).
  • The Promoter may disallow entries in its absolute discretion and without giving reasons.
  • The Promoter may, at any time, verify the validity of claims and determine the eligibility of Applicants (including an Applicant’s identity and professional status) and disqualify any entry or refuse to award a prize or a Tour where false or misleading details have been given by an Applicant, or where an Applicant has behaved in a fraudulent or dishonest manner, or otherwise than in accordance with these Terms or the spirit of the Contest.
  • Applicants agree to comply with all reasonable directions of the Promoter and any prize or Tour suppliers. Applicants agree that they will not do anything that could bring the Promoter, their brands or their products into disrepute.
  • Failure by the Promoter to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
  • All decisions made by the Promoter, its employees or agents are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • In the event the Contest cannot operate as anticipated, the Promoter may, where reasonably necessary, amend, suspend or cancel any aspect of the Contest (including any prize, these Terms, or aspect of the Tour) in its sole discretion. No compensation will be payable to any Applicant or finalist.
  • Except for any liability that cannot be excluded by law, the Promoter excludes all liability for any costs, expenses, losses and damages suffered or incurred by the Applicant, including any liability for personal injury or death or loss of business opportunity or liability due to negligence of the Promoter or its personnel, whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in connection with these Terms or the conduct of the Contest (including, without limitation, in connection with, participation in the Contest by the Applicant; the Prize; the Tour; the unavailability of any Prize; any tax liability incurred by the Applicant; or any variation in the value of the Prize or the Tour).
  • The Promoter will collect and hold personal information provided by Applicants for the purposes of this Contest. Failure to provide requested personal information may disqualify a person from being able to receive a prize or the Tour. All personal information provided by Applicants will be held by the Promoter and may be disclosed to third parties including agents, contractors, service providers, suppliers and regulatory authorities (if required) in New Zealand, Australia, North America or Japan. Under the Privacy Act 1993 (NZ) and the Privacy Act 1988 (AUS), Applicants have the right to access and correct any such personal information. Applicants may access and request correction of any of their personal information held by the Promoter by sending an email to orakingawards@kingsalmon.co.nz.
  • This Contest and these Terms will be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand. Applicants irrevocably submit to the jurisdiction of the Courts of New Zealand with respect to any legal action, suit or proceeding or any other matter arising out of or in connection with this Contest and/or these Terms.
  • If a translation of these Terms conflicts with the English version of the Terms, the English version shall prevail.
